Philosophy: The Music Department at Bethlehem Academy is dedicated to empowering students to translate their unique personal narratives—spiritual, academic, and cultural—into a universal musical language. We believe that by mastering the essential building blocks of music, including technical proficiency on their instrument or voice, musical vocabulary, and musical notation, students gain the agency to create original expressions. Our role is to identify each student's musical passion and provide the advanced technique and creative confidence necessary to pursue it. By fostering a supportive and innovative learning community, we prepare our students to be lifelong learners who possess the discipline of an artist and the heart of a servant, ready to share their talents.

Students will

  • Students will develop both basic and advanced techniques for their specific instrument or voice. This focus ensures that physical skill never limits creative vision.
  • Students will master the essential vocabulary and signage of music. Understanding the"how" and “why” behind music theory allows students to read, write, and communicate ideas effectively with other musicians.
  • Students will pull from multiple influences—from traditional hymns to contemporary styles—to create music that resonates with their lived experience.
  • Students will possess the curiosity and skill set to continue making, appreciating, and evolving with music long after they leave the classroom.
  • Students will perform as a way to share the gift of music. Our programs serve Bethlehem Academy and the broader community through performances and events that celebrate our collective growth and spiritual identity.
